My friend who runs a non-profit believes that, “Whoever has the heart, has the greatest influence in a person’s life.” This makes a lot of sense too, because when Jesus was walking around here on earth, he majored in building relationships. He spent a lot of time on dusty roads with his disciples. While walking together, he would tell a story, then they would chat about what the story meant, and later, when stuff happened – like a big storm or the death of a friend - he used the experience to reiterate the idea he had taught them through the story. In this way, he grew their relationships while he trained and prepared his disciples for life after he left this earth.
Let’s face it, our children are living in a culture very different from the one we grew up in, and, we parents have the critical job of preparing our children to live well outside the nest. Just like our master teacher Jesus, we have to be intentional about spending time with our children and about training them for the life issues ahead.
This type of relational training – using stories and discussion – is at the heart of First Friday Friends. We share great stories to teach important truths, and we open the door for life giving discussions between moms and daughters. Then, when issues arise, and they will, you can use that experience to reiterate the ideas taught through the stories.
Now’s the perfect time to start a group using the Heart to Heart books. There’s a back to school special too! I’m always happy to answer questions on how to start your own First Friday Friends group. To learn more or to connect with me, go to www.firstfridayfriends.com.
