I try to picture myself on that hillside when the angels came. It was an ordinary, peaceful night with the sheep. Suddenly, sheer terror struck as a large angel lit the sky and all the area around. Then came news so amazing that it must have been difficult to comprehend. I imagine that I would still be trying to process the “good news of great joy” as an entire army of angels joined together in songs of praise.
How would you respond to such an event?
Probably just like the shepherds. You’d probably run to check out if what the angels were saying was true. You’d probably babble with excitement to anyone and everyone who would listen… including your sheep. You want to know why you’d be so excited? Because…
With the birth of Christ came the birth of hope.
With the birth of Christ came news that is still being talked about over 2,000 years later.
With the birth of Christ came a new way to do life.
With the birth, death and resurrection of Christ came the indwelling Holy Spirit to live within each one of us.
Peter Marshall describes the amazing results of this “good news” this way in his book, Disciples of Clay:
“Now, Christianity, the power of Jesus Christ,
The Holy Spirit of God,
Is the only force that can change people for good.
It is the only power in the world that can change the gears in a man’s life from self-will to God’s will.
It is the only power that can give a man the right motives – to do what God wants him to do.
All that is needed is your own sincere desire,
Your willingness to confess your mistakes
And your stubborn selfishness
And to face up to your sins.
When they are acknowledged you will begin to see yourself as God sees you,
And when you ask forgiveness the miracle has begun.
And then, the miracle of Christmas continues –
for you are birthed again – a babe in Christ.
