Moms, have you taught your daughters the other four letter word?
Oh yeah, I said it! Don’t you get a little uptight when you hear that four letter word? When I was growing up it was typically used in conjunction with my entire name. “Catherine Alice Coyle, you obey me right now!” Ugh. I would let out a tiny sigh, my shoulders would slump, my head would drop down just a bit, and I would slowly move into action.
But what if we begin to think and teach our children that obey is actually love in action?
Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
He didn’t do that to force his power and authority over us. He did it because:
His commands are for our good.
His commands keep us from being dragged down with bad decisions.
His commands give freedom to live full and joyfully.
When we teach our children that our commands and God’s commands are made out of a heart of love and care for them, then they can better respond with a head and heart of love in action.
